Goodbye Zsa Zsa

One Lifetime Is Not Enough for Zsa Zsa Gabor, and now all the lavish items she left behind get to live on in someone else's world...yes, dahling it's the Zsa Zsa Gabor Auction.

Hungarian-born star Zsa Zsa Gabor made movies and appeared on several television shows during the heyday of her career, but really she was more of a personality than an actress, and will probably be best remembered for getting married nine times, slapping a cop and chatting up a storm on TV talk shows, and for moments like this:

At 99 years old, Ms. Gabor passed away at her home in Bel Air, a house almost as famous as she was. Supposedly Zsa Zsa swam naked in said pool every morning and also entertained such luminaries as Queen Elizabeth, Bob Hope, Ronald and Nancy Reagan, Elizabeth Taylor, Kirk Douglas, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Frank Sinatra, and Henry Kissinger on the premises.  It was also used as Lester Siegel's House in Argo.

Now all of what's left of Zsa Zsa are up for sale.  On April 14, 2018, Heritage Auctions will auction off the Gabor estate.  Items like Zsa Zsa's luggage is expected to go for up to $1,500 per set, a Johann Berthelsen oil painting might fetch $5,000, and her Steinway piano featured in the HBO film Behind The Candelabra is estimated to be sold for $10,000 to $15,000.

“She had a small mountain of [monogrammed] Louis Vuitton luggage that she traveled the world with,” explained Carolyn Mani, a Heritage Auctions director overseeing the springtime sale, which will be held at Gabor’s historic Bel Air, Calif., home, which was once owned by Howard Hughes.

“There are about 425 lots comprised of designer clothes, costume jewelry, examples of mostly 18th and 19th century French furniture, decorative arts, fine arts, and silver,” continued Mani of the catalog that also includes a gilded Steinway piano previously owned by Gabor’s third husband, actor George Sanders. “They painted it gold after he won the Academy Award [in 1951 for “All About Eve”] and she got possession of it again after he passed away.”

But in spite of Gabor’s expensive taste (she once quipped, “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, and dogs are a man’s best friend — now you know which sex has more sense,”) the auction may have something for everyone. Bidding will start at just $1, and all of the lots will be sold without a reserve. “The house is basically untouched since Zsa Zsa was there,” added Mani.

I had the pleasure of being friends with Zsa Zsa in the early 90's, and she was always so kind a gracious to me...with a lot of sass.  I have wonderful memories of going to her horse ranch with her and amazing lunches in Beverly Hills.  I was also friends with her daughter Francesca and spent many many days with her in her house in Laurel Canyon as she cried to me about her relationship with her famous mother.   I remember when Eva died, and  Francesca took me to the house while Zsa Zsa was going through her stuff...and she kept saying to me ...."take this, take that"  I have some really great trinkets from Eva.
