A Star Is Born: The Locations

A Star Is Born was filmed all over Los Angeles, at such iconic locations as the Shrine Auditorium, the Chateau Marmont, Griffith Park, the Hollywood Roosevelt, the Regent Theater, the Millennium Biltmore Hotel and the Coachella Music Festival, but a lot of people thought the movie was based in New York.

We totally get it. The movie didn't feel like Southen California, and the film never tells us where they are.

To add fuel to the fire, Lady Gaga is an Italian girl from New York, and in the movie, her father is a limo driver named Lorenzo (played by Brooklyn native Andrew Dice Clay) who speaks in a thick New York accent and constantly talks about Frank Sinatra. His friends who always seem to be hanging out at the house also have the same accents. Even the house feels very Long Island/Brooklyn/Queens.

And Jackson does put Ally on a private jet so that she can come to see him play at what appears to be Los Angeles' iconic Greek Theatre...if Ally lives in L.A., why would he need to do that? Confusing.

So it makes sense to think that the movie is set someplace other than L.A. even though all the other versions of A Star Is Born were clearly set in Hollywood, and at its core, the film has always been about Hollywood and a cautionary tale of fame.

Well to clear things up...and this is coming from the studio itself...Ally (Lady Gaga) and her father live in Angelino Heights/Echo Park area of Los Angeles, and Jack (BradleyCooper) lives in Topanga!

So there you have it.  The 2018 version of A Star Is Born is set in Los Angeles...so now let's take a look at some of the real-life locations.

Jack's House in Topanga:

Built in 1973, 481 Cold Canyon Rd is a single-story dwelling in the Monte Nido neighborhood of Calabasas designed by Malibu architect Douglas Rucker, who, coincidentally enough, also designed a house for Kris Kristofferson, star of the 1976 version of A Star Is Born opposite Barbra Streisand.

The house was later renovated by Dan Meis, the Staples Center architect who bought it in 2015 and lived there until last year when he sold it to an LLC named Eden Wild for a bit over $2 million.

Recently it was for sale and you can check out the listing HERE, but now it's a house that appeared in a big Hollywood movie and has a bathtub that Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga were naked in...adds value.

Ally's House:

The home of Lady Gaga’s Ally and her dad Lorenzo is located at 739 East Kensington Road in Arlington Heights.

Kensington is a single family home that contains 2,170 sq ft and was built in 1904. It contains 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom.

The Drag Bar:

The club that Jack discovers Ally is not a drag bar at, all.  It's a bar on Santa Monica Blvd called The Virgil....which actually used to be a gay bar called The Garage back in the early 2000s.

The Virgil, a longtime rock den, also once a dance club called Little Temple, is the latest incarnation of this East L.A. venue, which is owned by the same folks behind Zanzibar and the old Temple Bar.  For some reason, I can actually see Lady Gaga perform here just for fun.

The Super Market:

When Ally and Jackson go and buy frozen peas and then sit in the parking lot is one of the film’s most memorable moments.

They are actually sitting outside Super A Foods Market at 2925 Division St. Los Angeles, CA, 90065.  Now this is some insider stuff here, but I heard from a good source that Ally and Jackson paid cash for those peas...and didn't use a coupon.  😏

So there you have it.  After seeing landmarks like Indo Valley, iconic grocery store Super A, and the Greek Theater – Angelenos can finally have some piece of mind, and proof that A Star Is Born (2018) is a Hollywood film...and yea, we ❤️that.  To read more about the other versions of A Star Is Born...click HERE and HERE.

  1. To me, Ally and Jack's house always had this Country Western flavor to it; in my mind, the local could've been ANYWHERE in California, but it felt way more Central / Northern than it actually was.
