Goddess: The Fall and Rise Of The Movie "Showgirls"

They say that what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but for the cast and crew of the movie Showgirls, what happened in Vegas changed careers forever, and now a new documentary about this beloved disastrous film is being made.

Showgirls, the 1995 movie that had a visionary director, a controversial writer, and an ambitious young actress was supposed to be a searing look into the world of erotic dancers of Las Vegas, (and touted as a benchmark in a new era of adult entertainment) but quickly became a box office joke.  But why? Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Jeffrey Schwarz hopes to find out.

In his latest documentary, GODDESS: THE FALL AND RISE OF SHOWGIRLS.  Jeffrey Schwarz hopes to give voice to the as-yet-untold stories of the cast and crew of Showgirls who were there to see the film from creation to fall from grace.

“It’s been a longtime dream to make the definitive documentary about a film that has fascinated and flabbergasted audience since its release in 1995,” says Jeffrey, whose past films include I Am Divine, Tab Hunter Confidential, and The Fabulous Allan Carr. 

Showgirls failed at the box office and people ridiculed it, but in the last few years, it has become celebrated, loved, quoted, worshiped, defended, adored, intimidated, admired and even revered.

“Showgirls is a misunderstood masterpiece, and although it is a gaudy, over the top spectacle, it wrestles with issues of sex, power, and the American Dream. Goddess will dig deep into the intentions of its creators, recount the negative reaction by the press and the public, and chronicle how the cult of Showgirls has grown over the years.”
