Halston: The Man Who Sold His Name

There is a new Halston documentary coming out, and we can't wait.

If you were in New York City in the '70s and 80's you couldn't help but be obsessed with the designer Halston.  He was chic, a regular at Studio 54, and his parties were legendary. Now a new documentary about the designer who sold his name is heading to the big screen and it's simply titled HALSTON.

Halston was America’s first superstar designer who had a slew of celebrity clients including Anjelica Huston, Lauren Bacall, Margaux Hemingway, Elizabeth Taylor, Bianca Jagger, and Liza Minnelli.

He started designing as a milliner and rose to fame after designing the pillbox hat Jacqueline Kennedy wore to her husband’s presidential inauguration in 1961. He also designed uniforms for U.S Olympic team, Girl Scouts, NYPD and Braniff Airways.

Halston sold his name to various companies (one of the first to do so) before it was eventually acquired by Revlon, with Halston gradually losing control. He died in 1990 at the age of 57 from AIDS-related complications.

Halston's NYC Townhome.  Every celebrity who was worth knowing partied here.
Now a new documentary by the director of Dior And I,  Frederic Tcheng, is hoping to keep his memory of alive in HALSTON.

"HALSTON captures the epic sweep of the life and times of legendary designer Roy Halston Frowick, the man who wanted to “dress all of America.” Acclaimed filmmaker Frédéric Tcheng (“Dior and I”) expertly weaves rare archival footage and intimate interviews with Halston’s friends, family, and collaborators including Liza Minnelli, his niece Lesley Frowick, filmmaker Joel Schumacher, and the Halstonettes. Tcheng frames Halston’s story as an investigation using scripted scenes featuring actress and writer Tavi Gevinson as a young archivist diving into the Halston company records. The viewer is taken behind the headlines and into the thrilling struggle between Halston’s artistic legacy and the pressures of big business."

Halston premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival to solid reviews. It arrives in select theaters on May 24. To see the trailer click HERE.

In case you can't wait for the new doc, check out the incredible 2011 one, Ultrasuede: In Search Of Halston, a really wonderful movie made about Halston's life and influence by Whitney Smith...the same guy who created and stars in Southern Charm on Bravo.

Fun fact:  One of the DuPont twins who were in Whitney's doc also appeared in season 1 of Southern Charm as Whitney's mother Patricia's butler.  Where was Michael?

Or pick up a copy of the book, Simply Halston by Steven Gaines.  Its a great bio which Legendary Television is prepping into a limited series starring and executive produced by Ewan McGregor

Halston, we will always ❤️you and can't wait to see you on the big screen...and actually on the small screen too.  xoxo
