What Could Have Been: Titanic

Can you imagine Titanic without Leo DiCaprio as the beloved Jack?  Well, it's been rumored for years that Mathew McConaughey was originally cast for the role but turned it down.  The truth is finally answered.

During a recent Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast Mathew McConaughey was asked to confirm that long-running rumor, in which he replied that he thinks the rumor was started by James Cameron and confirms that yes, he did an audition with Kate Winslet.

“I had a good audition. Walked away from there pretty confident that I had it. I didn’t get it. I never got offered that. As I’ve said before, not even half-jokingly if it’s true, if that was an offer that didn’t come to me, I’ve got to go back and go, ‘I’ve got to meet in an alley with that agent.'"

"I did turn down L.A. Confidential. I think it was the Guy Pearce role. And that's a movie I really, really liked."

Matthew continued to say that not getting Titanic didn't detour his career because he still found a way to do what he’s currently doing and ending up being a movie he really liked. He met with Steven Spielberg about a role in Saving Private Ryan, but rather than taking on the sort of movie-star roles people expected from him, he accepted supporting parts in films by filmmakers he admired like Spielberg's Amistad and Robert Zemeckis' Contact (both released in 1997) before teaming with Ron Howard on EdTV in 1999. Many questioned these moves but he believed that although the films he chose (like Contact and Amistad) might have slowed his career path a bit, there were directors he wanted to work with and it was a personal decision.

So, the moral of HOLLYWOOD story is, if you didn't get that job you thought would make your career....never fret, Hollywood has a way of turning things around and usually for the better.

Mathew McConaughey ended up winning an Oscar for Best Actor for Dallas Buyers Club, concluding that everything happens for a reason. It seems that everyone successful in this industry has a story like this...and they are wonderful inspirations.  That is why we ❤️it!!! ALRIGHT  ALRIGHT ALRIGHT!!!
