The Cast Of "Less Than Zero" The TV Series

If you haven't heard yet, Less Than Zero, the best book about disillusioned, entitled youth in 80's Los Angeles, is being made into a series for Hulu, and a pilot has been shot.

"There is a feeling I get when I look to the west..."

Hulu is taking the famous Bret Easton Ellis novel and turning it into a new television series for their streaming service, and we couldn't be more excited.

According to Variety,  “Set in Los Angeles in the early 1980’s, Less than Zero has become a timeless classic,” read the official statement. “This coolly mesmerizing novel is a raw, powerful portrait of a lost generation who have experienced sex, drugs, and disaffection at too early an age. They live in a world shaped by casual nihilism, passivity, and too much money in a place devoid of feeling or hope.”

The show is based on the 1985 novel by Bret Easton Ellis and not the movie.

Of course, you remember, the feature film starring Robert Downey Jr., James Spader, Jami Gertz, and Andrew McCarthy. But if you are a fan of the book, you know that there is no connection between that story and the one in the movie that depicted Clay as an inarticulate zombie confused by the irony of Randy Newman’s “I Love L.A.” except for its title, the location of Southern California and the names of the characters.

The movie was begging for our sympathy whereas the book doesn't give a shit.

This version will hopefully be faithful to the book, and we now we know who was cast.

Austin Abrams plays the protagonist, Clay, the 18-year-old young man who comes home to Beverly Hills for Christmas break after being away for a few months at college to find his still-stationary friends in disarray.

“Clay comes home for Christmas vacation from his Eastern college and re-enters a landscape of limitless privilege and absolute moral entropy, where everyone drives Porches, dines at Spago, and snorts mountains of cocaine,” read the official synopsis. “He tries to renew feelings for his girlfriend, Blair, and for his best friend from high school, Julian, who is careering into hustling and heroin. Clay’s holiday turns into a dizzying spiral of desperation that takes him through the relentless parties in glitzy mansions, seedy bars, and underground rock clubs and also into the seamy world of L.A. after dark.

Abrams is probably still best known from his 2015-2016 run on AMC’s The Walking Dead.  He also had TV runs on The Americans and SMILF, along with numerous film roles, notably co-starring opposite Ben Stiller in the 2017 dramedy, Brad’s Status, as well as 2015’s Paper Towns and 2013’s Gangster Squad.

Lily Donoghue (The Goldbergs, Halt and Catch Fire) will play Blair, Clay's "sexy, ex-girlfriend" who hopes to rekindle their relationship during winter break.  Jami Gertz played the part in the original film.

Cooper Koch will play Julian, Clay’s childhood best friend who skipped college for a life free of the stresses of education — but that freedom is coming at a hard price. The part Robert Downey Jr. played in the movie.

Rip, Clay’s friend and drug dealer, who feels his trust fund “might never run out.”  is being played by Keenan Jolliff (The Americans, Daredevil).

Ronen Rubinstein (Dead of Summer) plays good-looking, entitled, and vain, Trent, who is attending UCLA, but his real focus is modeling.

James Bloor plays Daniel, a college classmate of Clay’s and an outsider to his high school friends but every bit as troubled as they are.

Cathryn Dylan plays Alana, one of Blair friends who has an abortion and is also friends with Clay.

Less Than Zero the tv series was written and executive produced by Craig Wright, who created and executive produces OWN’s Greenleaf, co-developed FX’s series adaptation of Gideon Raff novel Tyrant, and wrote for Lost and Six Feet Under. Bret Eason Ellis who famously wrote the novel is executive producing.

Less Than Zero is a book that I probably read about once a year.  Every time I pick it up and in different stages of my life it means a different thing.  Some of it haunts me, some of it leaves me awestruck...

That is why we can't wait for a new unfiltered visual version that plays like it was originally written.

In June 2018, we saw that the pilot was being shot at Dan Tana's, a location that was never in the book, and we snapped a few pics. Looks like someone drives some motorcycles, something else that was never ever mentioned in the book.

Well. we still love Less Than Zero, and at least they are shooting it in Los Angeles, and not recreating LA in Buenos Aries as they did in another Bret Easton Ellis adaptations, The Informers.   So we totally ❤️that.   Less Than Zero....can't WAIT to see you, I hope you come out soon. XOXO
