Hollywood Turns Tiki

Hollywood loves a theme party, and this Saturday night, Hollywood turns Tiki.

In celebration of the 60th anniversary of Hawaii’s statehood, Hollywood is throwing a party complete with a tiki marketplace, a tiki bar, tiki cuisine, tiki music, Polynesian dancers and film screenings.

Beginning at 1:30 PM, at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, entry into the courtyard is free to shop for Tiki art, memorabilia, clothing and accessories in our Tiki marketplace. At 3:30 PM the courtyard closes, except to ticket holders. Vendors include Black Cat Atomic Vintage, Clever Vintage, Eric October, Rarabird, Tiki Swag, artist Stephen Del Tour and more to be announced.

As a special bonus author Matthew Locey will be there and Hawaii on Film and author Ed Rampell will sign his The Hawaii Movie and Television Book.

And if that wasn't enough there are two amazing screenings:

35 mm!Archival Print!
GIDGET GOES HAWAIIAN
1961, Sony Repertory, 101 min, USA, Dir: Paul Wendkos
Soon-to-be 1960s beach movie favorite Deborah Walley inherits the title role from Sandra Dee in this surf-and-sun-filled romantic comedy. On a Hawaiian vacation with her parents, Gidget finds a gang of lads vying for her affections, which starts a chain of romantic complications when her boyfriend from home, Moondoggie (James Darren), arrives. Perhaps the best of the GIDGET series, the film costars Carl Reiner, Peggy Cass and Eddie Foy Jr. as square-but-loving parents.

PARADISE, HAWAIIAN STYLE
1966, Paramount, 91 min, USA, Dir: Michael D. Moore
Elvis Presley makes his final big-screen visit to our 50th state in this music-filled comedy. Presley stars as Rick Richards, a freewheeling former airline pilot who starts a charter helicopter business on Kauai with buddy James Shigeta. Whether shot from the air or the ground, the island visuals are stunning; adding to the fun are co-stars Suzanna Leigh, Marianne Hill and 10-year-old scene-stealer Donna Butterworth, who duets with Elvis on a couple of songs.
