Hollywood Back In The Day: 90's Edition

During the 1990s, with just an Olympus Stylus camera, Randall Slavin photographed Hollywood's young celebrities, capturing the last pre-internet generation of musicians and actors. Now with his new book, We All Want Something Beautiful he shares his photos of people like Lindsay Lohan, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Garner, Amber Heard, Rose McGowan and Tara Reid on-the-verge-of-stardom.

Before Hilary Swank and Charlize Theron were superstars, they were hanging out in Hollywood trying to make it. In We All Want Something Beautiful photographer Randall Slavin shows us the real last great decade before social media changed it all.

From the vinyl seats of Hollywood nightclubs in 1999 to glossy cover shoots in New York in 2019, Slavin has captured snapshots of it all, encapsulated in his debut photography collection, We All Want Something Beautiful. Featuring stunning portraits and spirited candids of the most recognizable people in Hollywood.

"I was very fortunate that a lot of my friends... let me experiment on them, and it helped when they blew up and became movie stars. I certainly had a leg up on a lot of other photographers who were starting out," Slavin said.

With his camera in hand, Slavin seemed to be in all the right places at the right time. He captured an image of Leonardo DiCaprio right before the film Titanic was released when he was hanging out with Theron at her birthday party in Hollywood's iconic Bar Marmont.

"You had these incredible places with people relaxing and letting their hair down," he explained. "I don't know if that happens anymore."

Social media has made it impossible to capture any kind of innocence again, but Slavin's photos give insight into a time when celebrities could party in relative privacy.

There are very few photos of stars from this time because the idea of photographing people at parties was just not a thing you did back then. This is why these photos are so important and so special.
